RECIPES USING ORANGES/Edited by Kirsten Anderberg

ORANGE RECIPES

SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE
1 1/2 c. pineapple, orange or apple juice ** 1/4 c. maple syrup, honey or brown sugar ** 1/3 - 1/2 c. cider vinegar ** 1/4 c. soy sauce ** 1 clove garlic, minced ** 2 T. cornstarch dissolved in 2 T. cold water

Mix all sauce ingredients (except the cornstarch in water) together in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Stir in dissolved cornstarch in water slowly and stir until sauce is clear and thick. Pour sauce over rice, steamed tofu, veggies, tempura, etc.

ORANGE SALSA
1/2 c orange juice * 2 tomatoes, chopped * 1/4 c chopped red onion * 1 T lime juice * 2 T fresh basil, chopped * 1 t. minced jalapeno pepper * salt and pepper to taste
In a saucepan over high heat, bring orange juice to a boil, cook until it is reduced to about a ¼ c, about 4 minutes. Then pour into a bowl to cool. Once cool, add the remaining ingredients.

ORANGE FRENCH TOAST
2 eggs * 1/2 c orange juice * 1/2 c milk * 1 t vanilla * 1/4 t cinnamon * 1/4 t nutmeg * 8 slices white bread * 1/4 c melted butter
In a bowl, mix all ingredients except the bread and butter. Dip both sides of bread into the mixture and put into a buttered rectangular baking pan. Refrigerate up to overnight, or bake immediately. Before baking, drizzle melted butter over the dipped bread then bake at 400 degrees or until browned.

ORANGE APPLE SYRUP
3/4 c orange jiuce * 1/4 c brown sugar * 1 apple, chopped * 1/2 t cinnamon * 1/4 t ginger * 1 orange, peeled and chopped
In a frying pan over medium heat, combine the orange juice and sugar, stirring as it bubbles. Add apple, cinnamon and ginger. Cook until apples are tender, then add the orange pieces. Serve over pancakes, french toast, ice cream, etc.

ORANGE HONEY SYRUP
3/4 c honey * 1 t butter * 1 T grated orange rind * 1/4 c orange juice * 1 t orange extract
Heat honey and butter until just boiling, then remove from heat, stir in the rind, juice and extract. Pour into jars and store in refrigerator. Reheat to serve. Great on pancakes, biscuits, muffins, desserts...

SOURCE FAMILY ORANGE SHAKE
1/2 banana, sliced * 1/2 c orange juice * 2-3 ice cubes * 1 T nonfat dry milk powder
In a blender, combine all ingredients and then blend until the ice is like a slushie. You can also make these with cranberry juice cocktail instead or you can make a tropical drink by using pineapple juice instead of the orange juice, and you can also sprinkle toasted coconut on top.

Orange Tooth Powder
2 T. dried lemon or orange rind ** 1/4 c. baking soda ** 2 t. salt
Grind rinds in food processor, adding other ingredients and processing until fine powder. Store in an airtight container in bathroom. To use, pour a little into hand and rub moistened toothbrush into it, then brush.

Variation on Orange Tooth Powder
1 t. orange tooth powder above ** 1/4 t. hydrogen peroxide
Mix together and brush teeth normally.

ORANGES - Use them as air fresheners, poking cloves into them then hanging them to dry. Run orange peels through your garbage disposal to make them smell better. And after cleaning your oven, you can bake some orange peels at 350 to eliminate the oven cleaning smell.
