When I Am An Old Woman, I Shall Wear Lime Green
The other day I was walking down the street, and was passed by a woman who was about 85 years old. She was wearing white pants, a hot pink shirt, and a sun hat tied down with a very bright hot pink scarf. She complimented *me* on *my* outfit when I walked by! Okay, that was a red flag! If flamboyantly dressed 85 year old women are admiring what I am wearing now in my 40's, I have to wonder if I will be dressed like them when I am older! And if I am honest, I thought the woman looked fabulous. She stood out like a freakin' hot pink thumb in the crowd, but I loved it. She looked very alive, and like she still knew how to have fun. It was like her clothing was smiling.
I saw another woman who looked to be in her 70's the other day, sporting an outfit that raised eyebrows everywhere she walked. She had on this lime green and hot pink leisure suit kind of thing. These puffy hot pink see-through sleeves came billowing out of this florescent green jumpsuit…The color contrast was really intense and for some reason, because it was on this older woman, it had extra punch. I do not know what it is about older women and flamboyant clothing, but I like it. I cannot wait to wear shocking colors, and raise eyebrows, when I am 90.
I was on a bus a while ago and there was a woman who was probably in her 80's, and she had on really interesting clothing. The style of the clothing was not so shocking, she had on a nice lace top. But it was the color…the color was outrageous. Again, it was this shocking lime green. I do not know where these older women are getting these florescent clothes, but it is great. They are the colorized edition of Bella Abzug.
I think part of what makes these florescent clothed older women so interesting is the way they front it off like they are not wearing the loudest outfit within 10 miles in all directions. They look like smart women, so I cannot imagine that they do not know they are wearing shocking colors. Somehow, I get this defiant vibe off it…like the loud clothing is a statement, even if they are just walking along all quiet and unassuming.
Somehow I get the feeling that these older women are getting a real kick out of wearing these shocking outfits. I know as a 44 year old woman, I find it intriguing and it makes me feel like there is still some fun to come in my older years. I even think about how fun it would be to go out in groups of florescent clothed older women! I feel like I need to start collecting lime green and hot pink things now, for my older years. There is a famous poem that says, "When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple…" But when I am an old woman, I shall wear lime green and florescent hot pink, and smile at 40 year old women, as they raise their eyebrows…and I will compliment *them* on what *they* are wearing, as they walk by.
