This show was put together by Christian Peacemaker Teams with Artists Against War and War Resisters to raise awareness and positivity about the detainees in Iraq. The weekly coffeehouse series features performances and information about conditions in Iraq. The first installment had beautiful performances by Din Jalonen (the Soles) and Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo).
Din Jalonen recalled the cause of the evening with his set-closer, "You'd Better Be Home Soon" and Greg Keelor had the whole room crooning to "Lost Together", and took us back with "Blowing in the Wind."
The most compelling performance, however was a reading from Eliot Weinberger's "What I Heard About Iraq" and slideshow depicting findings of various CPT teams. If you're finding national news broadcasts a little short of the real deal, come out to one of these evenings and meet some credible witnesses.
The Peace & Release series continues at the El Mocambo, main floor, every Sunday night until March 19, 2006. The series is sure to build, and you can expect contributions from Jason Collett, Scott MacLaughlin and a screening from Michael Franti (Spearhead). We'll be playing again on March 5. Same bat time...
