March 11, 2005 - Project Humanity

Project Humanity is a team of Ryerson Theatre School Students with big hearts and huge organizational skills.  I can't even begin to tell you who performed, as it was an artistic smorgasbord, with five shows taking place at one time throughout the night.  So, with apologies to anyone else who shared your incredible talent, artists included Joy Thompson, Flipside Collective, Peter Katz, JP Sunga, Hellmouths, Proxy Set . . . In the end, Project Humanity raised $2,000 towards Red Cross relief efforts, and raised my awareness on a few micro-cosmic factors:

1. If it's important to you to know where all the members of your band are when you're doing a show, two tips:  Have a band smaller than a football team, and don't play with anyone I know.  Big building, complicated event, thank God for text messaging!

2. A band with a missing lead singer and broken-armed drummer can still hold it down.  Mad props to the Flipside Collective!

3. If you ask people to get on your email list, you might as well have a list around, huh?  (If you're one off the people who was thwarted in your attempt to get on my list, it's not personal.  I did it to everyone.  Drop me a line sometime and I'll put you on!)

4. When the crowd starts whistling and screaming, you're not supposed to get scared and run out of the room, and say "Why are they doing that?"

5. Sound men run the show.  The crowd can yell "Encore!" all they want.  If he's done with you, you're done.  I discovered this when my mic was unceremoniously turned off, as I apologized for not doing an encore.  My thanks to the gracious artist who offered to let us eat into his set time.
